Production
Notes: 'Nailin' It To The Church' was one of The Wittenburg
Door's slug lines and has been adopted as the title of this film.
The original intent was to film a larger study of religious satire
and Christianity, titled 'Jesus Makes Me Laugh'.
During
2007, the production traveled through 17 US states and many Canadian
provinces interviewing satirists, academics, and church leaders
about the value of satire on faith. It became obvious that the story
behind The Wittenburg Door warranted a film of its own, hence 'Nailin'.
Watch for a series of short documentaries on the DVD, titled 'Jesus
Makes Me Laugh', to come out late 2008.
In part,
investigating religious satire was an attempt to discover that gray
line between when satire is a proponent for positive social change
and when it becomes cynical and destructive. Is there a way this
can be measured or are there tools that prevent satire from being
hurtful and condemning while encouraging reform? Or does cynicism
even matter? This film uses interviews, graphics from The Wittenburg
Door magazine, and clips of religious broadcasts to address these
questions.
Goals
for the film:
- Create
conversation about targets of satire that in the church. There
is a lot that goes on in the name of God that makes us want to
hold our collective noses. Should we not do something about it?
- Motivate
critical thinking. Comedy and satire may not be the highest of
academic/theological pursuits but the subjects behind the satire
are - they are questions of meaning, faith, the essence of religious
teaching, and putting into practice what we believe.
- This
film is for everyone, Christian + non-Christian, believer in religion
+ atheist + agnostic. There's something in the satire of The Wittenburg
Door to offend everyone. This film, as The Wittenburg Door, does
not intend to leave anyone content. The mandate of The Wittenburg
Door has always been to challenge their readers and push them
out of their comfort zone, reflect on their faith, the church,
and the practice of religion in the world.
While
The Wittenburg Door remained 'hands-off' in the creation of this
film, they have been very willing participants, providing unlimited
resources.
